  Gauge plate insulators once used in trackwork turnouts were cumbersome, expensive, time consuming to install and maintenance intensive. Over the years a number of ideas came and went, not really proving to be an ultimate solution. Finally Portec Rail Products found the right solution, a solution worthy of a patent. Portec Rail engineers took the best features of various gauge plate insulators in the market and applied a process similar to the manufacture of our Portec Poly-Insulated® Rail Joints by encapsulating a steel plate in polyurethane, and the patented Portec Poly-Insulated® Gauge Plate Insulator was born! The Portec Poly-Insulated® Gauge Plate Insulator offers electrical qualities equivalent to the Epoxy Fiberglass types Portec Rail offers but with the cost effectiveness and strength of a steel plate core as opposed to the Epoxy Fiberglass type being made entirely of composite material. The Portec Poly-Insulated® Gauge Plate Insulator provides excellent electrical integrity as well as resistance to moisture, excessive temperatures and extreme environmental conditions. Available in a number of sizes, the Portec Poly-Insulated® Gauge Plate can also be manufactured to custom sizes upon request.
